Tigers turn back Wolfe County 72-47

PAINTSVILLE — Paintsville won its opener in the 2021-22 boys' high school basketball season convincingly, defeating visiting Wolfe County 72-47 on Wednesday, Dec. 1.

Paintsville featured four scorers in double figures as part of a balanced offensive attack.

The Tigers shot 49.1 percent (27-of-55) from the field. Paintsville shot 40 percent (8-of-20) from 3-point range.

The Tigers shot 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from the free throw line.

Paintsville outrebounded Wolfe County, a team from the nearby 14th Region, 41-26.

Registering a double-double, Connor Fugate scored a game-high 24 points and secured 10 rebounds to lead Paintsville to the win in its season opener. Fugate connected on six of eight free throw attempts.

Following his brother in scoring for the Tigers, Colby Fugate added 14 points.

Behind Colby Fugate in scoring for Paintsville, Braxton Tharp chipped in 13 points.

Recording another double-double for the Tigers, Baron Ratliff scored 10 points and hauled down a game-high 13 rebounds.

Nearly reaching double figures for Paintsville, Jase Kinner posted nine points.

Wolfe County shot 31.7 percent (20-of-63) from the field. The Wolves were 6-of-20 (30 percent) from 3-point range.

Fourteenth Region member Wolfe County shot 50 percent (3-of-6) from the free throw line.

Wilgus Tolson scored 17 points to lead Wolfe County. Accompanying Tolson in double figures in scoring for the Wolves, Sawyer Thompson added 15 points.

Nearly reaching double figures in scoring for Wolfe County, Levi Mayabb added nine points.

Paintsville is scheduled to visit Wolfe County for another boys' high school basketball game on Monday, Dec. 13.
