Tigers fall to Somerset in overtime

PAINTSVILLE — Paintsville came up short as visiting Somerset held on to win 35-34 in overtime at Memorial Field on Friday, Sept. 9.

Somerset stopped the Tigers’ two-point conversion in the extra period to claim the win.

The Briar Jumpers rushed 32 times for 350 yards and four touchdowns. Guy Bailey led Somerset on the ground, rushing 18 times for 215 yards and two touchdowns.

Following Bailey in the Briar Jumpers’ offensive attack, Kam Hughes rushed seven times for 81 yards and two touchdowns.

Kris Hughes and Josh Bruner split time at quarterback for the Briar Jumpers, combining to complete 11 of 16 passes for 107 yards. Bruner threw one touchdown pass in Somerset’s emotional win.

Leading Somerset in receiving, Palmer hauled in a scoring pass from Bruner.

Paintsville rushed 38 times for 180 yards and one touchdown. Accounting for most of the Tigers’ yardage on the ground, Harris Phelps rushed 25 times for 163 yards and one touchdown.

AJ James paced Paintsville through the air, completing 12 of 19 passes for 174 yards and four touchdowns. James, who threw one interception, completed at least one pass to six different receivers.

Jonah Porter led the Tigers in receiving. Porter hauled in three receptions for 38 yards and two touchdowns.

Aiding Paintsville through the air, Phelps and Austin Allen hauled in one touchdown pass reception apiece.

Allen (13 tackles), Cain Grim (12 tackles) and Grayson Peters (11 tackles) combined to lead the Tigers’ defensive effort.

Paintsville is scheduled to host Knox Central on Friday, Sept. 16.
