Tigers edge Raceland in overtime 28-21

RACELAND — Visiting Paintsville stopped Raceland on fourth-and-goal in overtime to win 28-21 in the second round of the Class 1A UK Orthopaedics/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl on Friday, Nov. 27.

Paintsville improved to 7-2 after notching the win.

As a result of the setback, Raceland ended its season 4-6.

Familiar rivals, Paintsville and Raceland were tied 14-14 at halftime.

Karsten Poe and Harris Phelps combined to lead Paintsville to the win. Filling in at quarterback for Jake Hyden, who remains sidelined with an injury, Poe completed 7-of-11 passes for 143 yards. Producing on the ground, Poe rushed nine times for 35 yards and three touchdowns. Continuing to excel on the ground, Phelps rushed 26 times for 130 yards and one touchdown.

Poe scored from 10 yards out on the first play in overtime.

Zach Taylor was Poe's top target, hauling in three receptions for 62 yards.

Mason Lovely led Paintsville defensively, posting 12 tackles.

Devin Hall and AJ James added one interception apiece for Paintsville in the victory.

Jake Heighton scored two of Raceland's three touchdowns in the season-ending loss.

The Tigers upended Raceland after dropping a district game to the Rams during the regular season.

Paintsville is scheduled to host Hazard in the third round of the Class 1A UK Orthopaedics/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl on Friday, Dec. 4.
