PIKEVILLE — Pikeville topped Paintsville 61-49 in the quarterfinals of the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament at Appalachian Wireless Arena on Thursday, March 2.

The Panthers outscored the Tigers 18-13 in the first quarter.

Pikeville led 33-26 at halftime and extended its lead in the second half. The Panthers led 49-37 at the end of the third quarter.

Heath Jarrell led a trio of Pikeville scorers in double figures, delivering 19 points for the Panthers.

Joining Jarrell in double figures for Pikeville, Charlie Fitzer scored 15 points and Rylee Samons netted 11 points.

Contributing to the Panthers’ win, Eli Johnson (six points), Josh Hughes (four points), EB Walters (four points) and Ian Onkst (two points) provided Pikeville’s other scoring.

Ethan Cole scored 19 points to pace Paintsville.

Connor Fugate was the only other Paintsville player to reach double figures, netting 15 points for the Tigers.

Five players accounted for all of Paintsville’s scoring. Jase Kinner and AJ James added six points apiece for Paintsville while Brock Woods contributed three points.

The loss eliminated Paintsville from the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament. Paintsville ended its 2022-23 season 14-17.
