Martin County defeats Floyd Central 75-69

PIKEVILLE — Martin County defeated Floyd Central 75-69 in the opening round of the 15th Region Girls’ Basketball Tournament at Appalachian Wireless Arena on Monday, Feb. 27.
Floyd Central faltered after outscoring Martin County 20-13 in the first quarter.
Martin County outscored Floyd Central 22-6 in the second quarter to lead 35-26 at halftime.
The 57th District champion, Martin County shot 47.2 percent (25-of-53) from the field. The Lady Cardinals made six of 15 three-pointers, shooting 40 percent from three-point range.
Martin County shot 65.5 percent (19-of-29) from the free throw line.
Laken Williams scored a game-high 32 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead Martin County to the win.
Martin County featured three scorers in double figures with Alyssa Allen netting 16 points and Katie Marcum adding 12 points.
Providing Martin County’s other scoring, Brooklyn Marcum contributed seven points, Kennadi Mollett posted five points and Sophie Harless tallied three points.
Kennedy Harvel scored 25 points to lead Floyd Central in the region tournament game. Harvel connected on five of 11 three-point field goal attempts.
Delivering a double-double for Floyd Central, Madi Meade scored 17 points and hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds.
Giving Floyd Central three scorers in double figures, Riley Compton netted 12 points.
Finishing outside double figures, Jada Johnson (six points), Chelsea Johnson (five points), Allie Adkins (two points) and Kaylee Hall (two points) accounted for Floyd Central’s other scoring.
