Newsome leads UPike to third place finish in Roger Merb Invitational

McDERMOTT, OHIO — The UPike women's golf wrapped up the Roger Merb Invitational on Tuesday, Oct. 20, notching a third-place finish with a 36-hole score of 712 (+120). The Bears matched their round one score of 356 (+60) on Tuesday, holding their third place slot on the leaderboard. Midway University placed second with a two-round score of 656 (+33), seven strokes behind tournament champion Ohio Valley University. UPike senior Boo Newsome paced the Bears in both rounds, earning a fifth place finish out of 31 golfers. Newsome recorded a lone birdie in round one, carding an 18-hole score of 81 (+7) before shooting an 82 (+8) in the final round. A Sheldon Clark High School graduate, Newsome finished just a pair of strokes short of fourth place finisher Jewel Goins of Ohio Valley University. Newsome also made the all-tournament team with a fifth place finish. Gabriel Blankenship clubbed an 83 (+9) in the final round, a three stroke improvement over her first round score. Blankenship recorded a birdie on the 13th hole on her way to a top 15 finish, tying for 11th overall with a score of 169 (+21). Freshman Emily Brown notched a top 20 finish in her collegiate debut, carding scores of 91 (+17) and 90 (+16) to claim the 17th spot on the leaderboard. The Bears are slated to return to the links on Friday, Oct. 30 in the MSC Fall Invitational in Bowling Green.
