Newsome finishes runner-up at MSC Championships; tabbed First Team All-MSC

BOWLING GREEN — University of Pikeville senior Boo Newsome finished runner-up in the 2021 Mid-South Conference Women's Golf Championships at Bowling Green Country Club on Friday, May 7. As a team, UPIKE finished fifth with a three-round team score of 1,028.

Following the final round, Mid-South Conference honors were announced and Newsome claimed her third First-Team All-MSC selection.

Newsome, a Sheldon Clark High School graduate who has 11 tournament championships, shot a 70 (-2) through the first 18 holes which is the best single round score in her career at the MSC Championships. She shot for birdie on six holes, three on both the front and back nines. A Martin County native, Newsome began on hole four and clubbed for par on her first holes, before carding back-to-back birdies on the sixth and seventh holes. After round one, Newsome sat one stoke out of the lead.

The senior tallied a 74 (+2) on day two, improving through the second half of the course where she shot for birdie on the 12th and 18th holes. Newsome matched leader Gracie Parrot in the second round and remained second on the leaderboard. On the final day, weather played a factor but the teams played on and Newsome clubbed an 80 (+8).

Fellow senior Grace Morris tied for 24th overall with a three-round score of 262 (+46). Morris shot identical scores of 87 (+15) on day one and two before carding an 88 (+16) in the third round. Morris totaled three birdies in the event.

Gabrielle Blankenship totaled 269 (+53) and finished 30th overall. Blankeship shot 89 (+17) in rounds one and two before carding a 91 (+19) in the third. Emily Brown carded a 54-hole score of 279 (+63) to finish 38th while Mallory Davis rounded out the team score with a 283 (+67) to finish tied for 41st.
