Messer leads Cardinals over East Ridge 57-22

INEZ — Brock Messer rushed 17 times for 302 yards and five touchdowns to lead Martin County over visiting East Ridge 57-22 in a Class 2A, District 8 game on Friday, Sept. 30.

The Cardinals moved ahead early and steadily pulled away from East Ridge in the Class 2A, District 8 game.

Martin County excelled on the ground, rushing 53 times for 548 yards and seven touchdowns.

Finishing second in rushing for the Cardinals, Madden Miller rushed eight times for 83 yards.

Contributing on the ground for Martin County, Christopher Phillips and Jaquan Rufus added one rushing touchdown apiece.

Producing on special teams for the Cardinals, Messer returned a kickoff for a touchdown and connected on each of his four PAT attempts.

Maddox Johnson converted on each of his three PAT attempts in the Cardinals’ win.

Dylan Burdine led East Ridge through the air, completing 16 of 28 passes for 268 yards and one interception. On the ground, Burdine rushed nine times for 44 yards and one touchdown.

East Ridge rushed 24 times for 139 yards and three touchdowns. Isaiah Adkins emerged as East Ridge’s leading ground gainer, rushing 12 times for 89 yards and two touchdowns.

Brad Howell paced East Ridge in receiving, hailing in six receptions for 160 yards.

Defensively for East Ridge, Adkins posted a game-high 18 tackles while Howell and Gabe Mullins added 12 tackles apiece.

Martin County is scheduled to visit Shelby Valley for a Class 2A, District 8 game on Thursday, Oct. 6.
