STANVILLE — Betsy Layne named Nathan Martin its new boys’ basketball head coach on Saturday, Dec. 13.

Martin replaced Mike Howard, who resigned from the Betsy Layne boys’ basketball head coach position on Wednesday, Dec. 10.

Martin is a 2011 Betsy Layne graduate. As a player, Martin helped to lead Betsy Layne to the 2011 All “A” State Championship. After graduating, he went on to play one season at the University of Pikeville under national championship-winning head coach Kelly Wells.

Martin currently works as a pharmacist for Commonwealth Pharmacy in Pikeville. He is married to Laura Martin, and together they have two sons, Atlas and Silas.

“Betsy Layne has always been home to me,” said Martin. “I had the honor of playing basketball here, and the lessons I learned on that court stayed with me long after graduation. After being away for nearly ten years, I felt called to bring my family back home- back to the community that helped shape who I am today.

“To now return to my alma mater as a coach is truly humbling. This opportunity means more to me than wins and losses. My goal is to make a positive difference in the lives of these young men, to teach them the value of hard work, accountability, and respect both on and off the court.

“I am committed to helping our players reach the next level in life, whatever that may look like for them. Whether it’s creating opportunities through basketball, academics, career paths, or personal growth, I want to advocate for them, open doors, and help them believe in what’s possible. My focus is on empowering these young men with confidence, discipline, and purpose that will carry them far beyond the gym.

“We will continue to build a program rooted in positivity, discipline, and pride. I want our players to represent Betsy Layne with class and understand that wearing this jersey means being part of something bigger than themselves.

“Thank you to the community for the support, encouragement, and trust. I am excited to give back, to lead with integrity, and to continue making Betsy Layne a name we can all be proud of.”

Betsy Layne is the reigning 58th District boys’ basketball champion.
