Martin County tops East Ridge in home opener 40-6

INEZ - Martin County rolled to its second straight win in the 2020 high school football season on Friday, Oct. 2, topping Class 2A, District 8 rival East Ridge 40-6 in a home opener. The win allowed Martin County to move to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in Class 2A, District 8.Martin County rushed 23 times for 328 yards and five touchdowns in the district win. The Cardinals put the game out of East Ridge's reach early, moving ahead during the opening quarter and never faltering. Branson Smith led Martin County on the ground, rushing nine times for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Another Martin County running back, Kolby Sparks rushed five times for 91 yards Quarterback Jason Maynard, Logan Proctor and Dawson Mills added one rushing touchdown apiece for the Cardinals. Maynard rushed three times for 79 yards and one touchdown. A diverse Martin County rushing attack featured seven different ballcarriers. Trough the air, Maynard completed one of three passes for a 50-yard touchdown. The Martin County quarterback threw one interception. Parker Davis hauled in a 50-yard touchdown pass reception from Maynard in Martin County's victory. The Cardinals held East Ridge to only 142 yards of total offense. Randy Kinser led Martin County defensively, recording 12 tackles. Martin County is scheduled to visit Shelby Valley for another Class 2A, District 8 game on Friday, Oct. 9.
