Martin County drops district game to Shelby Valley

ROBINSON CREEK — Martin County came up short on the road as host Shelby Valley pulled away to win 49-36 in a Class 2A, District 8 football game on Friday, Oct. 9. The Cardinals pushed former champion Shelby Valley throughout the mid-season district matchup. Shelby Valley (4-1 overall, 2-1 district) amassed 564 yards of total offense in the victory. The Wildcats rushed 38 times for 331 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Russ Osborne, a freshman, led the Wildcats through the air, completing 12 of 17 passes for 233 yards and four touchdowns while throwing one interception. Anthony Pallotta, Lincoln Billiter, Jayden Newsome and Jesse Cook reeled in one touchdown pass reception apiece for the Wildcats. Newsome led Shelby Valley on the ground, rushing 21 times for 229 yards and three touchdowns. Martin County (3-2 overall, 1-1 district) rushed 42 times for 357 yards and one touchdown in the loss. Logan Proctor led Martin County, rushing nine times for 111 yards and three touchdowns. Following Proctor on the ground for Martin County, Dawson Mills rushed 11 times for 109 yards and one touchdown. Branson Smith was held out of the endzone but rushed 13 times for 94 yards for the Cardinals. Through the air for Martin County, quarterback Jason Maynard completed two of 10 passes for 64 yards and one touchdown. Maynard threw three interceptions in the district setback. Parker Davis hauled in both of Maynard's completions for 64 yards and one touchdown. Thriving on both sides of the ball, Proctor racked up a game-high 15 tackles for the Cardinals. Martin County is scheduled to host undefeated West Carter for a Class 2A, District 8 game on Friday, Oct. 16.
