Lawrence County notches district win over Floyd Central

EASTERN — Lawrence County pulled away to defeat Floyd Central 52-38 in a 58th District girls’ basketball game on Tuesday, Feb. 6.

The win allowed Lawrence County to clinch the number one seed for the 2023-24 58th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament.

Lawrence County improved to 14-8 overall and 5-1 in the 58th District after notching the win.

Following the loss, Floyd Central dropped to 9-13 overall and 4-2 in the 58th District.

Floyd Central edged Lawrence County 11-10 in the opening quarter but faltered.

Lawrence County battled back to lead to lead 30-20 at halftime.

Extending its lead, Lawrence County led 37-22 at the end of the third quarter.

Lawrence County shot 33.3 percent (15-of-45) from the field. The Lady Bulldogs made six of 20 three-point field goal attempts, shooting 30 percent from beyond the arc.

Lawrence County shot 72.7 percent (15-of-22) from the free throw line.

Excelling inside, Lawrence County outrebounded Floyd Central 36-23.

Registering a double-double, Leandra Curnutte scored 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Lawrence County to the 58th District win.

Delivering another double-double for Lawrence County, Sophie Adkins scored 13 points and claimed 10 rebounds.

Accompanying Curnutte and Adkins in double figures for Lawrence County, Kaison Ward netted 12 points while grabbing seven rebounds.

Chipping in offensively, Jada Patton (four points), Abby Nelson (three points) and Abby Maynard (two points) accounted for the rest of Lawrence County’s scoring.

Floyd Central shot 31.8 percent (14-of-44) from the field. The Lady Jaguars also shot 30 percent (three-of-10) from three-point range.

Floyd Central shot 63.6 percent (seven-of-11) from the free throw line.

Riley-Jo Compton scored nine points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead Floyd Central, which was limited offensively throughout the 58th District matchup.

Raegan Laferty (seven points), Maddy Engle (six points), Carmen Rackey (six points), Chloe Crase (five points) and Allie Adkins (five points) followed Compton in Floyd Central’s scoring column.
