Lawrence County comes up short in overtime

PIKEVILLE — Lawrence County came up short in overtime as Pikeville held on to win 46-43 in overtime in the 15th Region Girls’ Basketball Tournament title game at the Appalachian Wireless Arena on Saturday, March 5.
Pikeville (30-2) captured its fourth straight 15th Region girls’ basketball title.
Lawrence County, which faced a double-digit deficit on several occasions, outscored Pikeville 12-2 in the fourth quarter to force overtime.
Pikeville outscored the Lady Bulldogs 7-4 in the fourth quarter to pull out the win.
Productive early, Pikeville doubled up Lawrence County 16-8 in the first quarter. Pikeville led 27-20 at halftime in the region championship game.
Prior to Lawrence County’s late push, Pikeville led 37-27 at the conclusion of the third quarter.
Trinity Rowe scored 11 points to lead Pikeville to the victory. Nearly joining Rowe in double figures for the Lady Panthers, Kyera Thornsbury and Rylee Theiss added nine points apiece. Barely missing a double-double, Theiss pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
Lawrence County shot 35 percent (14-of-40) from the field. The Lady Bulldogs finished two-for-10 from three-point range.
Lawrence County shot 65 percent (13-of-20) from the free throw line.
Kensley Feltner scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs. In addition to Feltner reaching double figures for Lawrence County, Tyra Hammond scored 11 points.
Paintsville graduate Kristy Orem, in her role as head coach, guided Pikeville to its fourth straight region championship.
Lawrence County exited the 2021-22 girls’ high school basketball season 27-8.
