LOUISA — Lawrence County outlasted Floyd Central 67-62 in overtime in the 58th District Girls' Basketball Tournament championship game on Thursday, Feb. 24.
Under the direction of head coach Melinda Feltner, Lawrence County claimed its third straight 58th District title.
The win allowed Lawrence County to improve to 25-7.
Determined Lawrence County outscored Floyd Central 9-4 in overtime to claim the victory.
Lawrence County shot 37.3 percent (22-of-59) from the field. The Lady Bulldogs hit five of 20 three-point field goal attempts.
Lawrence County shot 60 percent (18-of-30) from the free throw line.
Kensley Feltner recorded a double-double to lead Lawrence County to the district championship-clinching win. Among the top girls' high school basketball players in the state, Feltner scored 36 points and pulled down 18 rebounds, leading all players in scoring and rebounding.
Nearly reaching double figures in scoring for Lawrence County, Leandra Curnutte netted nine points.
Following Curnutte, Sophie Adkins added eight points for the Lady Bulldogs.
Contributing to Lawrence County's win, Abby Nelson chipped in six points.
Floyd Central edged Lawrence County 17-16 in the first quarter but faced a deficit midway through the district tournament game. Lawrence County outscored Floyd Central 13-8 in the second quarter to lead 29-25 at halftime.
Adding to ts advantage after the intermission period, Lawrence County outscored Floyd Central 15-10 in the third quarter to lead 44-35.
Battling back on its home floor, Floyd Central outscored Lawrence County 23-14 in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime tied 58-58.
Finishing strong, Lawrence County regained the lead in overtime and forced Lawrence County to play from behind late during the extra period.
Chipping offensively, Emmalee Holt (three points), Abby Maynard (three points) and Tyra Hammond (two points) provided the rest of Lawrence County's scoring.
Grace Martin scored a team-high 22 points to lead Floyd Central to the win. Joining Martin in double figures for Floyd Central, Kamryn Shannon netted 11 points.
Both Lawrence County and Floyd Central advanced to the 15th Region Girls' Basketball Tournament at Appalachian Wireless Arena in Pikeville.
Lawrence County 81, Prestonsburg 50
Lawrence County topped Prestonsburg 81-50 in the semifinals of the 58th District Girls' Basketball Tournament at Floyd Central High School on Wednesday, Feb. 23.
The Lady Bulldogs shot 52.8 percent (23-of-58) from the field. Lawrence County shot 34.5 percent (10-of-29) from three-point range.
The Lady Bulldogs shot 71.4 percent (15-of-21) from the free throw line.
Lawrence County received double figures scoring from four different players.
Kensley Feltner scored a game-high 28 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Lawrence County to the win.
Leandra Curnutte (18 points), Sophie Adkins (13 points) and Kaison Ward (11 points) joined Feltner in double figures for the Lady Bulldogs.
Faith Lazar paced Prestonsburg, scoring 22 points and pulling down seven rebounds.
Nearly recording a double-double for Prestonsburg, Celina Mullins scored nine points and hauled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
