Bulldogs’ season ends with loss to Pikeville

PIKEVILLE — Lawrence County pushed late but came up short as Pikeville held on to win 63-57 in the opening round of the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament at the Appalachian Wireless Arena on Wednesday, March 2.
Following the loss, Lawrence County exited the 2021-22 boys’ high school basketball season 24-8.
The Bulldogs faced a deficit throughout the region tournament game.
Pikeville sprinted out in front early, outscoring Lawrence County 21-7 in the first quarter.
The All “A” Classic statewide champion, Pikeville led 35-20 at halftime and maintained a lead throughout the second half.
However, Lawrence County tested Pikeville after the intermission period.
But Pikeville, which led by as many as 19 points, never trailed in the region tournament game.
Pikeville shot 38.5 percent from inside the arc. More productive beyond the arc, Pikeville shot 42.1 percent from three-point range.
The Panthers shot 78.9 percent from the free throw line.
Nick Robinson scored 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead Pikeville to the win.
In addition to Robinson reaching double figures for the Panthers, Rylee Samons scored 14 points and Laithan Hall netted 11 points.
Lawrence County shot 46.7 percent from inside the arc in the winning effort. The Bulldogs shot 37.5 percent from three-point range.
Lawrence County shot 75 percent from the free throw line.
Cody Maynard scored a game-high 20 points to pace the Bulldogs. Joining Maynard in double figures for Lawrence County, Kaden Gillispie netted 14 points and Trenton Adkins added 12 points.
