Lady Eagles capture 57th District title

INEZ — Johnson Central defeated Martin County 51-46 in the 57th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament title game on Wednesday, Feb. 28.

Advancing to the 15th Region Girls’ Basketball Tournament as a district champion, Johnson Central shot 35.4 percent (17-of-48) from the field. The Lady Eagles made five of 18 three-point field goal attempts.

Johnson Central shot 70.6 percent (12-of-17) from the free throw line.

Karlea Stanley and Maddie Prater scored 10 points apiece to lead Johnson Central to the win.

Barely missing double figures for Johnson Central, Sophie Younce and Kaylyn McKenzie netted nine points apiece.

Taylor McKenzie (five points), Becca Wright (four points), Adyson Burchett (two points) and Haylee Marsillett (two points) also contributed offensively for Johnson Central, which featured eight different scorers.

Younce paced Johnson Central inside, claiming nine rebounds.

Martin County shot 25 percent (12-of-28) from the field. The Lady Cardinals made three of 15 three-point field goal attempts.

Martin County shot 65.5 percent (19-of-29) from the free throw line.

Laken Williams scored a game-high 27 points to lead Martin County in the district tournament title game.

Chloe May (six points), Brooklyn Marcum (six points), Alyssa Allen (four points), Katie Marcum (two points) and Maci Maynard (one point) followed Williams in Martin County’s scoring column.

Katie Marcum led Martin County inside, grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds.

Johnson Central and Lawrence County were meeting in the opening round of the 15th Region Girls’ Basketball Tournament at Appalachian Wireless Arena in Pikeville at press time on Tuesday, March 5.
