Lady Bulldogs fall to Prestonsburg in district tournament

PRESTONSBURG — Pulling off an upset win, Prestonsburg held on to beat Lawrence County 59-57 in overtime in the 58th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament on Monday, Feb. 26.
The loss eliminated number one seed Lawrence County from the 58th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament.
After notching the win, number four seed Prestonsburg advanced to the 58th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament title game.
Lawrence County edged Prestonsburg 13-12 in the opening quarter.
However, Lawrence County and Prestonsburg were tied 23-23 at halftime.
Lawrence County led 36-33 at the end of the third quarter but faltered.
Abby Nelson made one of two free throws for Lawrence County with 0.4 remaining on the clock in the fourth quarter to tie the game 50-50 and force the matchup into overtime.
Lawrence County’s Sophie Adkins and Jada Patton each fouled out in the fourth quarter.
Prestonsburg outscored Lawrence County 9-7 in overtime to claim the win.
Audrey Prater scored a game-high 20 points to lead Prestonsburg to the win. In addition to Prater’s offensive performance for Prestonsburg, Jade Fitzpatrick and Allison Howard netted 11 points apiece while Ashley Tackett posted 10 points.
Accounting for Prestonsburg’s additional scoring, Amelia Newsome added four points and Haley Lafferty contributed three points.
Prestonsburg won despite making only 12 of 26 free throw attempts.
Adkins and Patton scored 17 points apiece to pace Lawrence County in the district tournament game.
Barely missing double figures for Lawrence County, Kaison Ward posted nine points.
Behind Ward in Lawrence County’s scoring column, Leandra Curnutte tallied seven points.
The additional scorers for Lawrence County were Nelson (three points), Abby Maynard (two points) and Madison Artrip (two points).
