Cardinals capture third straight 57th District championship

INEZ — Martin County topped Magoffin County 83-73 in the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament title game on Thursday, Feb. 29.

Remaining on top, Martin County captured its third straight 57th District boys’ basketball title.

Martin County shot 48.4 percent (30-of-62) from the field. The Cardinals made six of 23 three-point field goal attempts.

Martin County shot 77.3 percent (17-of-22) from the free throw line.

Luke Hale scored 20 points to lead Martin County to the win. Hale connected on three of nine three-point field goal attempts.

Joining Hale in double figures for Martin County, Brayden McKenzie scored 18 points, Jacob Sturgell netted 16 points and Devan Maynard posted 12 points.

Nearly reaching double figures as part of a balanced offensive effort for Martin County, Peyton Davis added nine points and Bryson Dials contributed eight points.

Maynard paced Martin County inside, securing eight rebounds.

Magoffin County shot 39.4 percent (28-of-71) from the field. The Hornets made seven of 26 three-point field goal attempts.

Magoffin County shot 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the free throw line.

Zane Whitaker scored 24 points to lead the Hornets. Whitaker connected on seven of 11 two-point field goal attempts.

Delivering a double-double for Magoffin County, Aden Barnett scored 23 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.

Behind Barnett in Magoffin County’s scoring column, Ethan Salyer netted 12 points and Grayson Whitaker posted 11 points.

Rounding out Magoffin County’s scoring, Walker Russell chipped in three points.
