Lady Bulldogs finish runner-up in 58th District

EASTERN —Lawrence County finished runner-up in the 58th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament.

Betsy Layne held on to beat Lawrence County 94-85 in the 58th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament title game on Wednesday, Feb. 25.

The Lady Bulldogs slipped to 12-16 after suffering the loss.

Lawrence County faced a deficit at the end of each quarter but pushed Betsy Layne in the second half.

Betsy Layne entered halftime ahead 42-25. Prior to falling short, Lawrence County scored 60 points in the second half.

Kinleigh Martin led Betsy Layne, recording a double-double. Martin scored 25 points and claimed 10 rebounds for the Ladycats.

Along with Martin’s double-double for Betsy Layne, Shyla Kidd scored 24 points, Jaden Pente netted 20 points and Maddy Collins posted 14 points.

Lawrence County shot 59.2 percent (29-of-49) from the field. The Lady Bulldogs made seven of 12 three-point field goal attempts, shooting 58.3 percent from beyond the arc.

Lawrence County shot 80.0 percent (20-of-25) from the free throw line.

Brooke Marcum paced Lawrence County in the 58th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament title game. Marcum poured in a game-high 35 points for the Lady Bulldogs.

Four of five scorers for Lawrence County reached double figures. Joining Marcum in double figures for Lawrence County, Jada Patton scored 20 points, Emalynn Kitts netted 16 points, and Maddison Artrip posted 11 points.

Finishing in single digits for Lawrence County, Addison Bowen contributed three points.
