Lady Bulldogs defeat Letcher County Central in season opener

LOUISA — Winning its season opener, defending 15th Region girls’ basketball champion Lawrence County defeated Letcher County Central 58-46 on Tuesday, Nov. 28.

Lawrence County shot 54.5 percent (24-of-44) from the field. The Lady Bulldogs made three of 13 three-point field goal attempts.

Lawrence County shot 70 percent (seven-of-10) from the free throw line in its win.

Sophie Adkins, who is ranked among the top girls’ high school basketball players in the 15th Region, scored 22 points to lead Lawrence County to the victory.

Joining Adkins in double figures for Lawrence County, Kaison Ward scored 16 points and Jada Patton netted 10 points.

Rounding out Lawrence County’s scoring, Abby Nelson added six points and Leandra Curnutte contributed four points.

Perennial 14th Region title contender Letcher County Central shot 38.3 percent (18-of-47) from the field. The Lady Cougars made five of 14 three-point field goal attempts, shooting 35.7 percent (five-of-14) from three-point range.

Kiera Couch scored 15 points to lead Letcher County Central in the matchup.

Along with Couch’s team-high effort for Letcher County Central, Payge Damron scored 12 points and Alli Bailey netted 10 points.

Narrowly missing double figures for Letcher County Central, Kara Holcomb added nine points.
