Lady Bulldogs claim fourth straight district championship

LOUISA — Pulling off a four-peat, host Lawrence County battled back from behind late to defeat Floyd Central 57-53 in the 58th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament championship game on Wednesday, Feb. 22.
Lawrence County used a strong start to lead 19-13 at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Bulldogs led 34-22 at halftime but Floyd Central wouldn’t go away.
Floyd Central outscored Lawrence County 20-9 in the third quarter and owned multiple leads during the final period before the host team closed the game out.
Kentucky Miss Basketball candidate Kensley Feltner scored 31 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead Lawrence County to the district championship-clinching win. Feltner was named the 58th District Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year and Tournament MVP.
Lawrence County shot 36.5 percent (19-of-52) from the field. The Lady Bulldogs connected on three of 18 three-point field goal attempts.
Lawrence County shot 66.7 percent (16-of-24) from the free throw line.
Along with Feltner reaching double figures for Lawrence County, Sophie Adkins scored 13 points. Adkins scored the 1,000th point of her career during the fourth quarter.
Turning in another solid performance for Lawrence County, Kaison Ward added eight points and nine rebounds.
Contributing to Lawrence County’s win, Leandra Curnutte chipped in five points.
Madi Meade scored 18 points to pace former 58th District champion Floyd Central. In addition to Meade reaching double figures for Floyd Central, Kennedy Harvel netted 13 points.
Jada Johnson (nine points), Riley Compton (six points), Allie Adkins (five points) and Kaylee Hall (two points) supplied Floyd Central’s other scoring in the district championship game.
Both Lawrence County and Floyd Central advanced to the 15th Region Girls’ Basketball Tournament.

Lawrence County leveled Betsy Layne 71-38 in the semifinals of the 58th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament on Monday, Feb. 20.
The Lady Bulldogs led 39-19 at halftime.
Kensley Feltner scored 36 points and claimed 11 rebounds to lead Lawrence County to the win.
Following Feltner in scoring for Lawrence County, Kaison Ward netted 22 points.
Sophie Adkins, nearly reaching double figures, finished with nine points for the Lady Bulldogs.
Lawrence County’s additional scorers in the win were Brylee Stafford (two points), Leandra Curnutte (one point) and Jada Patton (one point).
Jaden Pente and Haleigh Damron scored 10 points apiece to lead Betsy Layne in the district tournament game.
The other scorers for Betsy Layne were Jayden Jarrell (seven points), Laci Hall (six points), Brookelyn Thacker (three points) and Kinleigh Martin (two points).
