Johnson Central captures region title on penalty kicks

BELFRY — Johnson Central edged 57th District rival Prestonsburg 2-1 in the 15th Region Girls' Soccer Tournament title match at Belfry High School on Thursday, Oct. 14.
Bouncing back, Johnson Central beat Prestonsburg after finishing runner-up to the Blackcats in the 57th District Girls' Basketball Tournament.
After notching the win, Johnson Central improved to 10-6-3 and advanced to the Girls' Soccer State Tournament.
Following the loss, Prestonsburg ended its season 19-2-0.
Regulation ended with Johnson Central and Prestonsburg tied 1-1. Johnson Central doubled up Prestonsburg 4-2 in penalty kicks to notch the win.
In regulation for Johnson Central, Haley Lykins scored a goal off an assist from Lakin Bentley.
Defensively for Johnson Central, goalkeeper Clara Blair recorded seven saves.
Sophie Stephens netted a goal off an assist from Anna Burchett for the Blackcats.
Goalkeeper Lindsey Stratton paced Prestonsburg defensively, logging two saves.
Johnson Central moved on to meet 11th Region champion Lexington Catholic in the opening round of the Girls' Soccer State Tournament.
