Golden Eagles roll past Letcher Central in district battle

WHITESBURG — Johnson Central remained the top team in Class 4A, District 8 on Friday, Oct. 22, pulling away to defeat Letcher County Central 48-18.

After registering the district win, Johnson Central improved to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in Class 4A, District 8.

Letcher County Central dropped to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in Class 4A, District 8 following the loss.

After trading a pair of touchdowns with Letcher County Central early, Johnson Central pulled away to lead 41-12 at halftime.

The Golden Eagles added a touchdown in the third quarter to force a running clock.

Johnson Central rushed 51 times for 450 yards and six touchdowns in the win.

Ranking as Johnson Central's leading rusher, Chase Price rushed 14 times for 162 yards and three touchdowns.

Producing on the ground for Johnson Central, quarterback Grant Rice rushed eight times for 96 yards and two touchdowns.

Following Rice, Matt Crum rushed 12 times for 80 yards and one touchdown for the Golden Eagles.

Jake Cain paced Johnson Central's defensive effort, recording 11 tackles.

Behind Cain in the defensive category for the Golden Eagles, Mason Lemaster logged eight tackles.

Quarterback Carson Adams led Letcher County Central completing 10 of 18 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns. Leading the Cougars in passing and rushing, Adams rushed 16 times for 79 yards and one touchdown.

As a team, Letcher County Central rushed 21 times for 105 yards and one touchdown in the loss.

Nicholas Hanning and Hayden Brashear hauled in one touchdown pass reception apiece for the Cougars.

Johnson Central is scheduled to visit rival Belfry for a regular season finale on Friday, Oct. 29.
