Golden Eagles knock off Boyd County 73-72

ASHLAND — Johnson Central knocked off perennial 16th Region title contender Boyd County 73-72 in a boys' high school basketball game on Monday, Feb. 14.

The Golden Eagles remained in the win column after edging Magoffin County 59-57 on a buzzer beater on Thursday, Feb. 10.

Johnson Central shot 46.2 percent (24 of 52) from the field in the back-and-forth matchup. The Golden Eagles connected on five of 18 attempts from three-point range.

Johnson Central shot 69 percent (20 of 29) from the free throw line in the win.

Ryleh McKenzie scored 20 points to lead Johnson Central to the win. Finishing directly behind McKenzie in scoring for the Golden Eagles, Grant Rice netted 19 points. Johnson Central featured four scorers in double figures with Connor Lemaster providing 11 points and Reece Collins contributing 10 points.

Nearly recording a double-double for the Golden Eagles, Ryan Rose netted nine points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Boyd County shot 38.7 percent (24 of 62) from the field. The Lions shot 35.1 percent (13 of37) from three-point range.

Boyd County shot 78.6 percent (11 of 14) from the free throw line.

Rheyce Deboard (24 points), Cole Hicks (15 points) and Ace Taylor (11 points) combined to lead the Lions.

Andrew Mortimer
