INDEPENDENCE — Class 4A frontrunner Johnson Central notched its second win in the 2020 high school football season on the road, defeating host Simon Kenton 47-17 on Friday, Sept. 25.Johnson Central moved to 2-0 after claiming the win. Simon Kenton, ranked fifth in Class 6A, dropped to 2-1.The Golden Eagles scored first and never trailed. Johnson Central led 33-10 at halftime. Dominating on the ground, Johnson Central rushed 53 times for 491 yards and six touchdowns. Senior Dylan Preston, the 2019 KHSAA Class 4A State Championship MVP, rushed 14 times for 153 yards and one touchdown in the Golden Eagles' victory. Two games into the 2020 high school football season, Preston leads Johnson Central in rushing. Turning in a breakout performance, Mason Lawson rushed 12 times for 124 yards and three touchdowns for reigning Class 4A state champion Johnson Central. In addition to excelling on the ground, Lawson hauled in a 33-yard scoring pass. Another sophomore, fullback Chase Price, rushed eight times for 99 yards and one touchdown. Chipping in on the ground for the Golden Eagles, Blayden Sexton and Matt Crum combined to rush 10 times for 97 yards. Through the air, junior quarterback Grant Rice completed three of four passes for 42 yards and one touchdown for the Golden Eagles. Providing defensively for Johnson Central, junior Jake Cain recorded an interception. Johnson Central is scheduled to visit Clay County for a Class 4A, District 8 game on Friday, Oct. 2.
