Golden Eagles fall to Corbin in third round

CORBIN — Johnson Central came up short as Corbin won 35-21 in the third round of the 2022 Class 4A UK HealthCare Sports Medicine State Football Finals on Friday, Nov. 18.

The loss eliminated Johnson Central from the 2022 UK HealthCare Sports Medicine State Football Finals. Johnson Central, which claimed the Class 4A, District 8 championship, concluded the 2022 high school football season 10-3.

Corbin scored first during the second quarter but Johnson Central managed to pull even.

Moving back out in front, Corbin scored to lead 14-7 at halftime.

The Redhounds remained out in front of the Golden Eagles throughout the second half.

However, Johnson Central continued to push host Corbin before suffering the season-ending loss.

Running back Cameron Combs led Corbin to the win, rushing 19 times for 128 yards and two touchdowns.

Following Combs in Corbin’s rushing attack, quarterback Kade Elam rushed 10 times for 57 yards.

Through the air, Elam completed seven of 15 passes for 120 yards and three touchdowns.

Brody Wells paced Corbin’s receivers, reeling in four receptions for 88 yards and two touchdowns.

Following Wells, Carter Stewart hauled in two receptions for 29 yards and one touchdown in Corbin’s win.

Defensively for the Redhounds, Zayne Hammack recorded a game-high 15 tackles.

Zack McCoart and Mason Lawson each delivered one rushing touchdown in Johnson Central’s season-ending loss. In addition to reaching the endzone via the ground, McCoart hauled in an 83-yard touchdown pass reception from quarterback Jacob Grimm for the Golden Eagles.

Corbin is scheduled to host Franklin County in the Class 4A State Semifinals on Friday, Nov. 25.
