Golden Eagles edge Tigers 48-47

PAINTSVILLE — Johnson Central edged crosstown rival Paintsville 48-47 in a 57th District boys’ basketball game on Friday, Feb. 2.

The win allowed Johnson Central to even its 57th District record to 2-2.

Following the loss, Paintsville slipped to 0-3 in the 57th District.

Johnson Central overcame shooting 32.6 percent (15-of-46) from the field to claim the win.

The Golden Eagles made only six of 21 three-point field goal attempts.

However, Johnson Central shot 75 percent (12-of-16) from the free throw line.

Austin Slone led Johnson Central with a game-high double-double, scoring 19 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.

Narrowly missing double figures for Johnson Central, Brayden Shepherd netted nine points.

Contributing offensively, Andrew Meeks (five points), Kyle Rose (five points), Dawson Montgomery (four points), Mason McKenzie (three points) and Jacob Breeding (three points) chipped in offensively for the Golden Eagles.

Montgomery connected on a free throw to lift Johnson Central to the district win.

Paintsville shot 31.8 percent (14-of-44) from the field. The Tigers made four of 14 three-point field goal attempts.

Paintsville shot 68.2 percent (15-of-22) from the free throw line.

Ethan Cole scored 13 points to pace the Tigers. Along with Cole reaching double figures for Paintsville, Anderson Lauffer and Jase Kinner netted 10 points apiece.

Barely missing double figures for Paintsville, Brock Woods scored nine points.

Rounding out Paintsville’s scoring, William Helton chipped in five points.
