Golden Eagles down Magoffin County 76-61

SALYERSVILLE — Johnson Central claimed its second win over 57th District rival Magoffin County in the 2020-21 boys' high school basketball season on the road Thursday, Feb. 4, prevailing 76-61.

The Golden Eagles won despite Magoffin County showing much improvement since the two teams' prior district meeting January 14.

Johnson Central shot 45.3 percent (24-of-53) from the field. The Golden Eagles were 10-of-22 (45.5 percent) from 3-point range.

Johnson Central shot 69.2 percent (18-of-26) from the free throw line.

The Golden Eagles outrebounded the Hornets 41-22.

Johnson Central led 42-32 at halftime and remained on control throughout the second half.

Isaiah May turned in a game-high double-double to lead the Golden Eagles to the district win, scoring 29 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

Along with May's double-double, Cory VanHoose scored 17 points and John King netted 10 points for the Golden Eagles.

Magoffin County shot 46.8 percent (22-of-47) from the field. The Hornets were 4-of-14 (28.6 percent) from 3-point range.

Magoffin County shot 59.1 percent (13-of-22) from the free throw line.

Aden Barnett scored 23 points to lead the Hornets. Barnett was 9-of-16 from inside the arc.

Following Barnett, Isaiah Salyer netted 19 points for the Hornets.

Accompanying Barnett and Salyer in double figures in scoring for Magoffin County, Grayson Whitaker added 11 points.
