Football thoughts from Martin Davis

This article is in response to the Lawrence County vs. North Laurel football game held on Friday, Sept. 19…..

For those who don’t know enough about Kentucky HS Football as a whole… North Laurel is a 5A school (London, KY), Lawrence County is a 3A school.

There are 6 classifications in KY HS Football 1A-6A. 1A being the smallest, and 6A being the largest schools.

With that said, 5A North Laurel just last week, went on the road and got a big win over 6A Madison Central (Richmond), only giving up 7 points.

This week, Madison Central traveled to the #1 ranked team in KY’s 5A Class—Scott County HS (Georgetown) and beats them by twenty, 34-14! NORTH LAUREL IS TOUGH!

This game and the Ashland game, along with the scrimmage vs Johnson Central (all larger schools/teams) was to gauge and better prepare our boys for the physicality they will face in the later rounds of the playoffs. Of those, we won 1-Ashland, tied with JC in the scrimmage, and lost 1-NL, in what was and will be our absolute worst offensive game of the season…while missing our most dangerous weapon on the field—Kaden Johnson.

The Dawgs will learn from this, and they’ll be better from it.

*I should add—Ashland has dominated their last two opponents after their loss to Lawrence County Yesterday’s win was 42–0 at previously undefeated Russell.

**Johnson Central is 5-0 and dominating other mountain powerhouses (Pikeville, Belfry, Pulaski).

Now we know what needs the most improvement—we set our focus on Letcher County Central and taking 1st place in the District, which has been the 1st and most important goal all season!

Lawrence County fans make plans to travel down to Whitesburg, Friday, Sept. 26, and support these boys. Nothing fuels the players more than the roar of your own fans, especially on away games…they deserve it!
