LOUISA – Lawrence County is headed back to Owensboro after defeating visiting Magoffin County 84-64 in the 2A, Section 8 Boys' Basketball Tournament title game on Sunday, Jan. 9.

Cody Maynard scored a game-high 32 points to lead Lawrence County to the sectional championship-clinching victory. Maynard, who has scored over 2,000 points in his high school career, finished 11-of-11 from the free throw line.

Accompanying Maynard in double figures for the Bulldogs, Tyler Johnson scored 27 points and Will Lafferty added 10 points.

Nearly reaching double figures for the Bulldogs, Trenton Adkins netted nine points.

Lawrence County carried a lead out of each quarter, gradually pulling away to defeat former district rival Magoffin County convincingly.

The Bulldogs edged Magoffin County 22-20 in the opening quarter. Lawrence County used a 24-15 scoring advantage in the second quarter to lead 46-35 at halftime.

Stretching its lead after the intermission period, Lawrence County outscored Magoffin County 21-16 in the third quarter.

Ben Lafferty led Magoffin County, scoring a team-high 19 points for the Hornets. Joining Lafferty in double figures for Magoffin County, Aden Barnett scored 17 points and Zane Whitaker netted 11 points.

Lawrence County is scheduled to meet Christian Academy of Louisville in the opening round of the Kentucky 2A Boys' Basketball State Tournament in Owensboro.

Belfry 72

Lawrence County outlasted Belfry 76-72 in the 2A, Section 8 Boys' Basketball Tournament on Tuesday, Jan. 4.

Cody Maynard scored a game-high 29 points for the Bulldogs while Trenton Adkins added a double-double, netting 28 points and pulling down 21 rebounds.

Accompanying Maynard and Adkins in double figures for Lawrence County, Anthony Johnson netted 12 points.

Lawrence County shot 51.7 percent (31-of-60) from the field.

Sal Dean (27 points, 13 rebounds), DeMahjae Clark (16 points), Cross Taylor (14 points) and Tykee Peterson (11 points) each reached double figures for Belfry in the tournament game.

Lawrence County 89,

Floyd Central 63

Lawrence County pulled away to defeat Floyd Central 89-63 in the semifinals of the 2A, Section 8 Boys' Basketball Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 8.

Four Bulldogs reached double figures in scoring.

Leading Lawrence County to the victory, Cody Maynard tossed in a game-high 30 points. Joining Maynard in double figures for Lawrence County, Trenton Adkins scored 19 points, Anthony Johnson netted 18 points and Kaden Gillispie posted 11 points.

Lawrence County shot 47.1 percent (33-of-70) from the field. The Bulldogs hit seven of 19 three-point field goal attempts.

Lawrence County shot 76.2 percent (16-of-21) from the free throw line.
