Cardinals shut out West Carter 48-0

INEZ — Recording its third shutout in five games, Martin County blanked Class 2A, District 8 rival West Carter 48-0 on Friday, Oct. 14.

Martin County improved to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in Class 2A, District 8 after posting the win.

The Cardinals rushed 27 times for 354 yards and six touchdowns.

Brock Messer led Martin County to the shutout win. Messer rushed eight times for 203 yards and three touchdowns.

Madden Miller, Jaquan Rufus and Christopher Phillips added one rushing touchdown apiece for the Cardinals. Ranking second in rushing for Martin County, Miller rushed five times for 82 yards.

Maddox Johnson paced Martin County on special teams. Johnson connected on six of six PAT attempts for the Cardinals.

Miller and Caleb Costa recorded 12 tackles apiece for Martin County in the win.

Contributing on the defensive side, Rufus and Bryson Wells added nine tackles apiece for the Cardinals.

Delivering in the defensive secondary for Martin County, Damian Cheek (eight tackles) and Julian Stafford each recorded one interception. Cheek returned his interception for a touchdown in the Cardinals’ win.

Martin County is scheduled to visit Prestonsburg for a Class 2A, District 8 game on Friday, Oct. 21.
