Cardinals rush past Shelby Valley 49-20

INEZ - Martin County rushed 46 times for 439 yards and six touchdowns on its way to defeating visiting Shelby Valley 49-20 in a Class 2A, District 8 game on Friday, Oct. 8.

However, Martin County wasn't limited through the air.

Quarterback Jason Maynard completed two of three passes for 100 yards and one touchdown for the Cardinals. On the ground, Maynard rushed 10 times for 68 yards and two touchdowns.

Kolby Sparks, Branson Smith, Dawson Mills and Madden Miller added one rushing touchdown apiece for the Cardinals.

Sparks rushed 12 times for 180 yards and one touchdown to lead Martin County on the ground.

Following Sparks, Smith rushed 12 times for 91 yards and one touchdown for the Cardinals.

On the receiving end of Maynard's scoring strike for Martin County, Mills hauled in an 84-yard touchdown pass reception.

Leading Martin County defensively, Maynard recorded two interceptions.

Quarterback Russ Osborne paced Shelby Valley, completing eight of 16 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns. Osborne threw a pair of interceptions in the district matchup.

Brady Bentley and Ethan Bentley each hauled in one touchdown pass reception for the Wildcats.

Shelby Valley rushed 29 times for 134 yards and one touchdown in the setback.

Leading Shelby Valley on the ground, Osborne rushed 16 times for 73 yards and one touchdown.

Caleb Lovins led Shelby Valley on the defensive side, recording a game-high 23 tackles and three tackles for losses.

Following Lovins for the Shelby Valley defense, Jayden Newsome added 10 tackles, one tackle for a loss and one interception.

Martin County is scheduled to visit West Carter for a Class 2A, District 8 game on Friday, Oct. 15.
