Cardinals rush past Hazard, 20-7

INEZ — Opening the 2023 high school football season with a win, Martin County defeated Hazard 20-7 on Friday, Aug. 18.

The Cardinals rushed 42 times for 270 yards and three touchdowns. Brock Messer led Martin County on the ground, rushing 14 times for 102 yards and one touchdown.

Following Messer, Aiden Horn rushed 10 times for 41 yards and one touchdown in Martin County’s winning effort.

Behind Horn in the Cardinals’ rushing attack, Madden Miller took nine carries for 34 yards.

Jackson Miller paced Martin County through the air, completing four passes for 67 yards. Reaching the endzone via the ground, Miller added another rushing touchdown for the Cardinals.

Brayden Estep, Dray Duff, Devan Maynard and Julian Stafford each hauled in one reception for Martin County in the season opener.

Martin County is scheduled to meet Pike County Central in the Pike County Bowl at Belfry High School at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 25.
