Cardinals knock off Tigers

PAINTSVILLE — Martin County pulled away to defeat Paintsville 41-28 at Memorial Field on Friday, Oct. 31.
The Cardinals and Tigers met in a regular season finale.
Martin County improved to 8-2 after registering the win.
As a result of the loss, Paintsville dropped to 5-5.
The Cardinals and Tigers were tied 14-14 at halftime. However, Martin County managed to move ahead during the second half and led 35-14 at the conclusion of the third quarter.
Quarterback Devan Maynard led Martin County’s offensive attack. Maynard completed 16 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns. Showing his versatility, Maynard rushed seven times for 58 yards and one touchdown.
Maynard completed at least one pass to seven different receivers. Brayden Fannin and Rex Ward each hauled in one touchdown pass reception for the Cardinals.
Martin County rushed 32 times for 141 yards and three touchdowns. Finding the endzone twice in Martin County’s win, Crayson Lafferty rushed 19 times for 55 yards and two touchdowns.
Lafferty paced the Cardinals defensively, recording a team-high 15 tackles.
Providing a score from the defensive side in Martin County’s victory, Jerrod Haney returned an interception 33 yards for a touchdown.
Quarterback Parker Helton led Paintsville, completing 14 passes for 178 yards and three touchdowns. Making an impact both through the air and on the ground for the Tigers, Helton added one rushing touchdown.
Andrson Lauffer was Helton’s go-to receiver, hauling in seven receptions for 168 yards and three touchdowns.
Defensively for Paintsville, Brody Howell tallied a game-high 21 tackles.
Martin County is scheduled to host Betsy Layne in the opening round of the KHSAA Class 2A State Football Playoffs on Friday, Nov. 7.
Both Marti County and Paintsville are preparing to compete in high school football postseason.
