Cardinals knock off Russell 73-59

RUSSELL — Visiting Martin County knocked off Russell 73-59 in a boys’ high school basketball season opener on Tuesday, Nov. 29.

Martin County shot 50 percent (31 of 62) from the field. The Cardinals shot 39.1 percent (nine of 23) from three-point range in the win.

Martin County connected on two of five free-throw attempts.

Luke Hale scored 23 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead Martin County to the victory.

Accompanying Hale in double figures for the Cardinals, Brayden McKenzie netted 19 points.

Aiding Martin County in the win, Peyton Davis added seven points and seven rebounds.

Matthew Linville (six points, six rebounds) and Dray Duff (six points, seven rebounds) were among the additional contributors for the Cardinals.

Russell lost despite shooting 51.2 percent (22 of 43) from the field. The Red Devils shot 33.3 percent (three of nine) from three-point range.

Russell shot 66.7 percent (12 of 18) from the free-throw line.

Damon Charles led Russell with a double-double, scoring 23 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.

Accompanying Charles in double figures for the Red Devils, Gavin Carter scored 17 points and Tatum Fleming netted 12 points.

Martin County and Russell aren’t scheduled to meet again in the 2022-23 boys’ high school basketball season.
