Cardinals fall short to Middlesboro

INEZ — Martin County fell short as visiting Middlesboro held on to win 14-12 in a non-district high school football game on Friday, Oct. 30.

The Cardinals and Yellowjackets are Class 2A rivals from bordering districts.

Returning to the field for a game for the first time since Friday, Oct. 9, Martin County pushed Class 2A, District 7 title contender Middlesboro.

Martin County outgained Middlesboro in total yardage but ultimately suffered the setback.

Quarterback Cayden Grigsby led Middlesboro, completing three of six passes for 83 yards and one touchdown.

Ethan Barton paced Middlesboro in receiving, reeling in two receptions for 75 yards and one touchdown in the Yellowjackets' victory.

The Yellowjackets rushed 35 times for 63 yards and one touchdown. Caleb Bogonko led Middlesboro on the ground, rushing six times for 33 yards and one touchdown for the Yellowjackets.

Riley Gent and Tyler Kelly carried Middlesboro defensively, combining to register 23 tackles and three tackles for losses.

Martin County rushed 40 times for 24 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. Kolby Sparks led the Cardinals, rushing 24 times for 166 yards and one touchdown.

Along with Sparks' performance on the ground, Logan Proctor rushed seven times for 43 yards and one touchdown for the Cardinals.

Martin County entered the week scheduled to visit Prestonsburg for a regular season finale on Friday, Nov. 6.
