Cardinals drop non-district game to Hornets

SALYERSVILLE — Visiting Martin County fell behind early and couldn't recover from its slow start as Magoffin County pulled away to win 56-8 in Week 2 of the 2020 Kentucky high school football season on Friday, Sept. 18.Magoffin County moved to 2-0 while Martin County dropped to 1-1. The Hornets set the tone in the opening quarter, outscoring the Cardinals 14-8. Martin County stretched its lead in the second quarter to lead 34-8 at halftime. The Hornets used a strong aerial attack to roll past Martin County. Magoffin County senior quarterback Lucas Litteral completed 13 of 24 passes for 299 yards and four touchdowns. Aden Barnett led Magoffin County in receiving, reeling in six receptions for 141 yards and two touchdowns. Brad Standifer, Magoffin County's leading receiver back from the 2019 season, hauled in three catches for 197 yards and one touchdown. Another receiver, Isaiah Salyer, hauled in four receptions for 51 yards and one touchdown as the Hornets won. Magoffin County rushed 12 times for 42 yards and one touchdown in the victory. Barnett added a rushing touchdown for the Hornets. Caleb Howard was the Hornets' leading tackler, recording 12 tackles. Following Howard, Brayden Standifer recorded nine tackles, four tackles for losses and two sacks. Ben Lafferty added five tackles, two tackles for losses, one sack and forced two fumbles for the Hornets. Lafferty delivered two fumble recovery touchdowns for Magoffin County in the win. Making an impact offensively and defensively, Barnett recorded two interceptions. Kolby Sparks rushed for Martin County's lone touchdown in the loss. Sparks led Martin County on the ground, rushing 18 times for 69 yards and one touchdown, Quarterback Charles Bowen led the Cardinals through the air, completing six of 10 passes for 135 yards. However, Bowen threw two interceptions. Magoffin County is scheduled to host Belfry on Friday, Sept. 25.In another game set for Friday, Sept. 25, Martin County is slated to visit Bath County.
