Cardinals defeat Pike County Central 43-3

INEZ — Martin County defeated Pike County Central 43-3 in the opening round of the KHSAA Class 2A State Football Playoffs on Friday, Nov. 3.

The Cardinals gradually pulled away to win convincingly, forcing a running clock before halftime.

Martin County excelled on the ground, rushing 28 times for 403 yards and five touchdowns.

Brock Messer led the Cardinals, rushing four times for 200 yards and three touchdowns.

Behind Messer, Class 2A, District 7 Player of the Year Madden Miller rushed seven times for 75 yards for the Cardinals.

Contributing to Martin County’s scoring effort, Aiden Horn and Jack Cline added one rushing touchdown apiece.

Striking through the air in Martin County’s win, Jackson Miller completed one pass for a 28-yard touchdown to Devan Maynard.

Defensively for Martin County, Damian Cheek recorded 10 tackles while Julian Stafford supplied one interception.

Both Madden Miller and Bryston Wells logged six tackles for the Cardinals in the postseason matchup.

Martin County (6-5) is scheduled to host Betsy Layne (10-1) in the second round of the KHSAA Class 3A State Football Playoffs on Friday, Nov. 10.
