Cardinals defeat Betsy Layne

INEZ — Martin County pulled away to defeat Betsy Layne 42-26 in the opening round of the KHSAA Class 2A State Football Playoffs on Friday, Nov. 7.

The Cardinals moved to 9-2 after notching the win. Martin County advanced to the second round of the KHSAA Class 2A State Football Playoffs.

The Cardinals never led until the third quarter. Martin County and Betsy Layne were tied 20-20 at halftime. Finishing strong, Martin County outscored Betsy Layne 22-6 in the second half.

Devan Maynard and Crayson Lafferty combined to lead Martin County to the win. Lafferty led Martin County on the ground, rushing 14 times for 151 yards and three touchdowns. Accounting for the rest of Martin County’s rushing yardage, Maynard rushed 13 times for 124 yards and one touchdown.

Through the air, Maynard completed two passes for 54 yards and one touchdown, which Rex Ward hauled in.  

Defensively for Martin County, Braxton Maynard picked off one Betsy Layne pass while Devan Maynard recorded two interceptions. Devan Maynard returned one of his two interceptions for a touchdown.

Martin County will visit Belfry in the second round of the KHSAA Class 2A State Football Playoffs on Friday, Nov. 14. The Martin County-Belfry game is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m.
