Cardinals deal Patriots first loss

HINDMAN — Martin County rolled past Knott County Central 41-6 in its Class 2A, District 7 opener on Friday, Sept. 26.

A contender for the Class 2A, District 7 title, Martin County claimed its fifth straight win. The Cardinals improved to 5-1 overall after securing the win over previously undefeated Knott County Central.

Quarterback Devan Maynard led Martin County to the win. Through the air, Maynard completed nine passes for 126 yads and one touchdown. Even more productive on the ground, Maynard rushed 13 times for 200 yards and three touchdowns.

Liam Fields paced Martin County in receiving. Fields hauled in four receptions for 81 yards and one touchdown.

Contributing on the ground in Martin County’s win, Crayson Lafferty rushed 14 times for 51 yards and one touchdown.

Providing a defensive score in the Cardinals’ victory, Brayden Fannin returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown.

Excelling on special teams, Martin County kicker Sebastian Genovese made each of his five extra point kick attempts.

Martin County is scheduled to host Leslie County for another Class 2A, District 7 game on Friday, Oct. 3.
