Cardinals claim 57th District championship

SALYERSVILLE — Martin County defeated Johnson Central 87-71 in the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament title game at Magoffin County on Thursday, Feb. 27.

The Cardinals shot 54.5 percent (26-of-66) from the field in the district tournament triumph. Martin County shot 34.5 percent (10-of-29) from three-point range.

The Cardinals shot 62.5 percent (five-of-eight) from the free throw line.

Parker Watts and Peyton Davis combined to lead Martin County to the district championship-clinching win, scoring 28 points apiece.

Following Watts and Davis in Martin County’s scoring column, Bryson Dials netted 18 points.

Along with the three scorers in double figures, Eli Mills (six points), Devan Maynard (four points) and Brayden Estep (three points) chipped in offensively for the Cardinals.

Austin Slone led Johnson Central, pouring in a game-high 41 points for the Golden Eagles. Slone was the only Johnson Central player to reach double figures.

Mason McKenzie (nine points), Kyle Rose (seven points), Dawson Montgomery (seven points), Brayden Shepherd (three points), Jaidon Daniel (two points), Andrew Collins (one point) and Kaleb Callaham (one point) followed Slone in Johnson Central’s scoring column.
