Bulldogs finish runner-up to Jaguars in 58th District

PRESTONSBURG — Floyd Central defeated Lawrence County 71-57 in the 58th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament title game at the Prestonsburg Fieldhouse on Thursday, Feb. 29.

Moving ahead early, Floyd Central outscored Lawrence County 15-11 in the opening quarter.

But Lawrence County used a 19-8 scoring advantage in the second quarter to lead 30-23 at halftime.

Answering, Floyd Central outscored Lawrence County 22-8 in the third quarter to lead 45-38.

Ronnie Samons scored a game-high 23 points to lead Floyd Central to the district championship-clinching win. Along with Samons reaching double figures for Floyd Central, Branden Moore netted 15 points and Chris Spriggs posted 13 points.

Finishing in single digits, Dylan Boyd (seven points), Dawson Moore (seven points) and Brody Buck (six points) accounted for the rest of Floyd Central’s scoring.

The Jaguars made 18 of 26 free throw attempts.

Andrew Bloomfield scored 21 points to lead the Bulldogs. Joining Bloomfield in double figures for Lawrence County, Hayden Perry posted 17 points.

Contributing offensively, Luke Fetherolf (seven points), Logan Ratliff (four points), Blake Marcum (four points) Gunnar Woods (three points) and Ford Scaggs (two points) were Lawrence County’s additional scorers.

The Bulldogs connected on seven of 14 free throw attempts.

Both Lawrence County and Floyd Central advanced in the postseason.

Lawrence County 89, Prestonsburg 76: Lawrence County topped Prestonsburg 89-76 in the semifinals of the 58th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 27.

The Bulldogs outscored the Blackcats 28-9 in the opening quarter.

Lawrence County led 44-22 at halftime but couldn’t prevent tournament host Prestonsburg from charging back from behind in the second half.

Prestonsburg battled back to lead in the third quarter before the Bulldogs regained control of the game.

Lawrence County led 58-55 at the conclusion of the third quarter.

Andrew Bloomfield poured in a game-high 31 points to lead Lawrence County to the win.

Accompanying Bloomfield in double figures for Lawrence County, Gunnar Woods scored 15 points, Hayden Perry netted 13 points and Logan Ratliff posted 11 points.

Finishing outside double figures for Lawrence County, Blake Marcum added nine points, Ford Scaggs contributed six points and Luke Fetherolf tallied four points.

Lawrence County made 20 of 31 free throw attempts.

Braxton Keathley scored 24 points to lead the Blackcats.

Following Keathley in Prestonsburg’s scoring column, Ethan Ferrell, Kaden Allen, Mason Stidham and Jaxon Estridge each posted nine points.

Rounding out Prestonsburg’s scoring, Cade Nairn netted five points.
