Cardinals beat Betsy Layne

STANVILLE — Martin County rolled past Betsy Layne 48-18 on Friday, Sept. 5.

The Cardinals improved to 2-1 after registering the win.

Martin County controlled the game, outscoring Betsy Layne 14-6 in the first quarter.

The Cardinals led 35-12 at halftime.

Senior quarterback Devan Maynard remained a leader for the Cardinals. Maynard rushed nine times for 173 yards and two touchdowns. Showing his versatility, Maynard completed eight passes for 122 yards and one touchdown. Maynard completed at least one pass to seven different receivers. Liam Fields hauled in two receptions for 56 yards and one touchdown for the Cardinals.

Crayson Lafferty emerged as Martin County’s second-leading rusher. Lafferty rushed 18 times for 164 yards and four touchdowns.

Kicker Sebastian Genovese paced Martin County on special teams. Genovese connected on six of seven extra point kick attempts.

Martin County is scheduled to host Knox Central for its next game on Friday, Sept. 12.
