Bulldogs top Vikings in season opener

LOUISA — Lawrence County pulled away to beat Rowan County 28-6 in a 2024 high school football season opener at Luke Varney Jr. Memorial Stadium on Friday, Aug. 23.
After a scoreless first quarter, Lawrence County outscored Rowan County 14-6 in the second quarter.
The Bulldogs, under the direction of Coach Travis Short, led 21-6 at the conclusion of the third period.
Lawrence County used a balance offensive attack to notch the win.
Quarterback Luke Fetherolf led Lawrence County, completing 11 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns. Showing his versatility, Fetherolf rushed two times for 33 yards.
Carlo Chicko emerged as Lawrence County’s leading receiver, hauling in five receptions for 102 yards and two touchdowns.
Lawrence County rushed 24 times for 179 yards and two touchdowns. Cavin Williams paced Lawrence County on the ground, rushing 17 times for 118 yards.
Kicker Brayden Queen paced Lawrence County on special teams. Queen connected on four of four extra-point kick attempts.
Defensively for Lawrence County, Caden Thompson and Colin Howard each recorded eight tackles.
Lawrence County is scheduled to host Shelby Valley for its next game on Friday, Aug. 30. Kickoff for the Lawrence County-Shelby Valley game is slated for 7:30 p.m.
