Cardinals fall to Hazard

HAZARD — Martin County couldn’t overcome a deficit as Hazard pulled away to win 51-20 in a 2024 high school football season opener on Friday, Aug. 23.

Quarterback Devan Maynard led the Cardinals. Through the air, Maynard completed six passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, Maynard rushed 15 times for 94 yards and one touchdown.

Brayden Estep paced Martin County in receiving. Estep hauled in three receptions for 94 yards and two touchdowns.

Producing on special teams for Martin County, kicker Caleb Horn connected on two of three extra-point kick attempts.

Crayson Lafferty paced Martin County defensively, recording 16 tackles and one sack.

Following Lafferty, Damian Cheek posted 11 tackles for the Cardinals.

Martin County is scheduled to meet Pike County Central in the Pike County Bowl at Belfry High School on Friday, Aug. 30. Kickoff for the Martin County-Pike County Central game is slated for 6 p.m.
