Bulldogs suffer season-ending loss to Greenup County

LOUISA — Lawrence County was limited to one touchdown as much-improved Greenup County pulled away to win 28-7 in the second round of the Class 3A UK HealthCare Sports Medicine State Football Finals at Luke Varney Jr. Memorial Stadium on Friday, Nov. 11.

The loss eliminated the Bulldogs from the Class 3A UK Healthcare Sports Medicine State Football Finals. Lawrence County ended the 2022 high school football season 9-3.

Greenup County improved to 8-4 after notching the win. The win allowed the Musketeers to move on to the third round of the Class 3A UK HealthCare Sports Medicine State Football Finals.

Greenup County scored first and never trailed. The Musketeers led 14-0 before Lawrence County reached the endzone.

Greenup County took a 14-7 lead into halftime and maintained the same advantage when the third quarter ended.

The Musketeers finished strong to claim the win, adding two touchdowns during the final quarter.

Quarterback Tyson Sammons led Greenup County to the win. Producing on the ground, Sammons rushed 19 times for 119 yards and two touchdowns. Perfect through the air, Sammons completed seven of seven passes for 70 yards.

In addition to Sammons, Ike Henderson made an impact for the Musketeers. Henderson rushed 16 times for 75 yards and two touchdowns. Leading Greenup County in receiving, Henderson reeled in one reception for 36 yards.

Jayce Griffith and Carson Wireman combined to pace Greenup County’s defensive unit, recording 10 tackles apiece.

Cody Crum scored Lawrence County’s lone touchdown in the season-ending loss. Crum reached the endzone on a four-yard rushing touchdown.

Greenup County is scheduled to visit Mason County in the third round of the Class 3A UK HealthCare Sports Medicine State Football Finals on Friday, Nov. 18.
