Several honored during pre-game, half-time activities

LOUISA — Pre-game and half-time activities at the Luke Varney Jr. Memorial Field on Friday, Nov. 4, included honoring the 1990-91 first undefeated football team in Lawrence County history, the 1991-92 first regional championship football team and the 1992-93 first district championship football team in Lawrence County history. The Louisa Middle School boys were also honored on the field before their state semi-final game on Saturday, Nov. 5, with Corbin.
Former coaches Eddie Wayne Michael and Billy Goldsmith were honored with plaques that will be mounted in front of the press box.
Former coach Walter Pigmon was honored with the Walter Pigmon Leadership Award, which will sit in the LMS trophy case. Ethan Preece and Carlo Chicko, students at LMS, were the first recipients.
Louisa Mayor Harold Slone also honored all three former coaches with “The Gem of the Big Sandy,” which is the highest honor for a Louisa citizen for their work in the community.
Dougie “Bulldog” Vanhoose, who has 40 years or more with the athletic department of LCHS, was honored with “The Bulldog of the Big Sandy” award.
The mayor also proclaimed Nov. 4 in Lawrence County as “The Unforgettables Day” from this day forward.
