Bulldogs finish runner-up in 58th District

STANVILLE — Lawrence County plated a pair of runs but it wasn’t enough as Prestonsburg prevailed 4-2 in the 58th District Baseball Tournament championship game at Betsy Layne on Tuesday, May 19.
Luke Hall pitched a complete game for Prestonsburg and earned the win on the mound. Hall recorded three strikeouts.
Braxton Davis started on the mound for Lawrence County and suffered the loss. Working out of a starting role, Davis pitched the first four and two-thirds innings.
Boedy Maynard relieved Davis on the mound for Lawrence County and pitched the final two and one-third innings.
Davis and Maynard each struck out one Prestonsburg batter in the 58th District title game.
Prestonsburg managed to score four runs on eight hits. Hall (two hits, two RBIs), Brody Napier (one hit, one RBI), Sam Hyden (one hit, one RBI), Cruiz Clark (one hit), Brady Allen (one hit), Connor Tucker (one hit) and Barrett Hunter (one hit) were each productive in Prestonsburg’s batting order.
Lawrence County plated two runs on six hits. Gray Derifield (one hit, one RBI), Owen Pack (one hit, one RBI), Eli Caudill (one hit), Grant Cochran (one hit), Max Murriel (one hit) and CJ Whitt (one hit) each aided Lawrence County’s offensive effort. Pack homered and drove in the first run for the Bulldogs.
Earning a top individual honor, Derifield was named the 58th District Baseball Player of the Year.
Both Prestonsburg (15-22) and Lawrence County (17-15) advanced to the 15th Region Baseball Tournament, which is being held at StoneCrest. Johnson Central is the reigning 15th Region baseball champion.
