Bulldogs fend off Bobcats

STANVILLE — Lawrence County beat Betsy Layne 5-2 in the semifinals of the 58th District Baseball Tournament on Monday, May 18.

Grant Cochran pitched four and one-third innings out of a starting role for Lawrence County and earned the win on the mound. Cochran posted four strikeouts in his start.

Gray Derifield replaced Cochran on the mound and pitched the final two and two-thirds innings in relief for the Bulldogs. Derifield turned in another solid pitching performance, recording five strikeouts.

Jaxon Johnson pitched a complete game for Betsy Layne and suffered the loss on the mound.

Defending 58th District champion Lawrence County was efficient offensively, scoring five runs on five hits. Cochran (one hit, one RBI), Derifield (one hit), Braxton Davis (one hit, one RBI), Boedy Maynard (one hit), Owen Pack (one hit) and Maddox Fletcher (one RBI) each delivered at the plate in Lawrence County’s winning effort.

After notching the win, Lawrence County advanced to the 58th District Baseball Tournament championship game.
