Bulldogs drop home opener to Greenup County

LOUISA — Lawrence County fell short as Greenup County held on to win 17-14 in a high school football game at Luke Varney Jr. Memorial Field on Friday, Sept. 2.

Following the loss, Lawrence County dropped to 1-1.

Greenup County moved to 3-0 after posting the win.

The Musketeers and Bulldogs swapped leads during the high school football game. Greenup County scored first and clung to a 7-6 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter.

But Lawrence County managed to outscore Greenup County 8-3 in the second quarter to move ahead 14-10.

The Bulldogs remained out in front 14-10 until the fourth quarter when Greenup County scored to regain the lead.

The Musketeers rushed 30 times for 150 yards and one touchdown. Ike Henderson led Greenup County on the ground, rushing eight times for 73 yards.

Quarterback Tyson Sammons ranked second in rushing for the Musketeers. Sammons rushed 17 times for 70 yards and one touchdown.

Leading Greenup County through the air, Sammons completed seven of 12 passes for 102 yards and one touchdown.

Sammons completed a touchdown pass to Brady Howard in Greenup County’s winning effort.

Dylan Ferguson and Talan Pollock each provided one rushing touchdown for the Bulldogs.

Ferguson led Lawrence County on the ground, rushing 15 times for 67 yards and one touchdown.

Finishing second in rushing for the Bulldogs, Marcum rushed nine times for 44 yards.

Pollock completed four of eight passes for 69 yards.

Kaden Gillispie hauled in four receptions for 69 yards to lead the Bulldogs in receiving.

Lawrence County is scheduled to visit Russell on Friday, Sept. 9. Kickoff for the Lawrence County-Russell football game is slated for 7:30 p.m.
